Reuters produces insightful look at long-term outlook for Prince’s huge catalog of unreleased songs

When the pop icon Prince died suddenly last week, Reuters produced an insightful look at the huge catalog of unreleased songs by an artist who had been fiercely protective of his intellectual property. The long-term outlook for Prince’s catalog – which his first manager Owen Husney values overall at well over $500 million – depends on who ends up in charge of his estate and how much direction he provided before his death to govern his legacy. At stake are potential retail sales, licensing fees and royalties on music from more than 30 albums that have sold over 36 million copies in the U.S. alone since 1978, plus an extensive cache of unheard recordings said to be locked away in a vault.
