Capturing rainbow-filled moments

LGBT month is in full swing and we’re proud of our coverage

On June 8, an “unbreakable” rainbow was installed in Zbawiciela Square, central Warsaw in defiance of vandals who had burned down a similar design. The new structure formed by a water hologram shone for four hours ahead of the city’s “Equality Parade”.

The original structure was built in 2012 and designed by artist Julita Wojcik. It included 16000 artificial flowers and was intended as a symbol of peace and happiness. After recurring attacks on the sculpture, it was eventually taken down in 2015.

Despite suffering repeated attacks LGBT rights group Milosc nie wyklucza didn’t give up and organized an alternative structure that would be harder to vandalize.

The result was captured by passers-by who shared videos and pictures online. Reuters social media team gathered user-generated-content to highlight the significance of the artwork and its reception. Warsaw resident Michal Lech, who caught the Rainbow on video, told Reuters that he took a taxi specially to see the new installation at its symbolic location.

Why we’re proud of our coverage

The month of June is in full swing and marks Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month. Pride celebrations are taking place around the world to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which occurred at the end of June 1969.

Reuters photographers have been on-hand capturing the celebrations. With an in-built planner and multimedia coverage Reuters Connect is an invaluable source for building eye-catching content and keeping up-to-date with Pride events.
