| Reuters exclusively reported that a conservative government would be cautious in managing Italy’s public finances. The nationalist Giorgia Meloni, seen as the front runner to become Italy’s first woman prime minister after the September 25 national vote, told Reuters that, if she becomes prime minister, she will not usher in an era of conflict with European institutions. Meloni, whose party has expressed anti-euro views in the past, was rushing to reassure markets and partners that as premier she would defend national interests, but would not do “crazy things”. Reuters also reported that under Meloni’s leadership, Italy will look to limit China’s economic expansion and continue to support Ukraine militarily if a rightist alliance wins next month’s election and that Italy would not be “the weak link” in the Western alliance. |
