Reuters reported exclusively that organizers of the Tokyo Olympics had begun drafting possible alternatives to holding the Olympics in July – in contrast to the position of Japan’s government and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe that postponement of the games was not an option. Hours later the International Olympic Committee confirmed that it had reversed course to consider alternatives because of the global coronavirus pandemic. Japan’s government followed with its own confirmation that alternatives were under discussion – news that sent shares of Japanese companies tied to the Olympics sharply higher in Tokyo trading on Monday, including travel agent H.I.S. and advertising company and Olympic partner Dentsu Group.
