On June 1, Reuters was ahead with key comments by Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan to state broadcaster TRT Haber, including that Turkey needs to lower interest rates, that he will announce “good news” regarding natural gas reserves in the Black Sea and that he hopes to maximize cooperation with Egypt and Gulf nations.

Market Impact

Erdogan’s comment on needing to lower interest rates sent the lira down 4% to record lows against the dollar.
