Reuters, the world’s largest multimedia news provider, has been named finalist for the first annual Covering Climate Now Journalism Awards in two categories. The awards honor exemplary coverage of climate change and highlight the impact of powerful storytelling on the defining story of our time.

Reuters Brasilia Correspondent Jake Spring’s coverage of Brazil’s environment is a finalist in the Breaking News category. Spring’s extensive reporting on deforestation in Brazil sheds light on how the government of President Jair Bolsonaro used the “pretext of COVID-19 safety measures to undermine inspection policies intended to protect the rainforest.” Covering Climate Now said, “Spring’s tenacious coverage is evidence of a reporter who deeply understands his beat, and stays on its cutting edge.”

Reuters Chief Correspondent Stephen Eisenhammer’s special report, “One Brazilian Farmer Tried—and Failed—to Ranch More Responsibly in the Amazon” is a finalist in the Feature category. Covering Climate Now explained, “This piece combined a rigorous analysis of one of the root causes of deforestation with a colorful description of Mauro Lúcio Costa, the Texas hat and buckle-wearing cattle rancher of northern Brazil who tried, and failed, to more sustainably farm in the Amazon.” The Reuters Special Report exposed “how systemic failures, abetted by President Jair Bolsonaro’s government, have allowed cattle raised on illegally cleared land to drive down prices…”

Reuters joined the ‘Covering Climate Now’ initiative in December 2019, reinforcing its ongoing commitment to covering climate impact for customers and news consumers. The project, co-founded by Columbia Journalism Review and The Nation, is aimed at strengthening the media’s focus on the climate crisis.

With 2500 journalists in 200 locations, Reuters produces hundreds of videos and thousands of pictures and text stories on climate change and the state of the world’s environment every month. By shedding light on climate change issues happening in the world, governments, businesses and people can respond rapidly and intelligently.

From human interest stories, exclusive reporting and investigations to breaking news and agenda-setting events, Reuters is delivering world-leading climate change coverage to billions of people every day. Follow Reuters coverage of climate change here.

Winners of the Covering Climate Now Journalism Awards will be announced in Early October. The full list of finalists is available here
