Changes to Breakingviews team

On Wednesday, Reuters Breakingviews Global Editor Peter Thal Larsen sent the following message to staff about some changes to the Breakingviews team:

Dear all,

At Breakingviews, we strive to set the agenda on finance, economics, policy and companies globally. Our global team produces incisive commentary, illuminating graphics, punchy daily videos, and thoughtful weekly podcasts. In recent months we have been preoccupied with a range of stories including the financial and economic fallout from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine; the impact of rising interest rates on markets and companies; the energy crisis, and China’s slowdown.

As Breakingviews evolves, we need to deploy our resources so that we can nimbly tackle the issues of most pressing interest to our global audience of investors, dealmakers, executives and policymakers. With that in mind, we have reshaped and strengthened the team, including appointing new regional editors in each of our three main territories, and installing several editors to co-ordinate our global coverage of core subjects. I’m pleased to share the following exciting changes:

Una Galani is appointed Asia Editor. Una has spent the last five years successfully putting Breakingviews on the map in India, while helping shape coverage across the region as Associate Editor. She previously spent four years as an editor and columnist in Hong Kong, setting the agenda on the financial hub’s capital markets, M&A deals, and its tycoons. She also penned a series of hard-hitting columns on Malaysia’s sovereign fund scandal. Una previously worked in Dubai and London. She’ll start her new role in Mumbai.

George Hay is appointed EMEA Editor. For the last five years, George has spearheaded coverage of energy, commodities, and climate change as Associate Editor based in London. He previously covered banking and financial services during and after the 2008 crisis, first as a columnist and then as European Financial Editor.

Lauren Silva Laughlin was appointed U.S. Editor in August. Lauren started at Breakingviews in 2006 as one of the founding members of our New York bureau. In her rich and varied career, Lauren spent two years as a junior investment banker, a year teaching the basics of journalism to high school students in Dallas and a stint as a senior columnist at the Wall Street Journal. She spent several years writing for Fortune, then planted the Breakingviews flag in Dallas before returning to New York as Deals Editor.

Francesco Guerrera is joining us as Global Economics Editor. Francesco is an experienced journalist with a stellar record of breaking news, writing incisive commentary and building online audiences. He’s currently Deputy Editor of La Repubblica, the Italian newspaper. Previously he held senior positions at the Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, Politico and Dow Jones Media Group. He has lived and worked in London, Brussels, Hong Kong, New York and Rome. Francesco will relocate to London and start work in the second half of November.

Jeffrey Goldfarb is appointed Global Corporate Finance Editor. Based in New York, he will coordinate coverage of big companies and the ways they interact with the world of finance, including a weekly column to showcase our best agenda-setting ideas from around the world. Jeff was previously Asia Editor in Hong Kong and Melbourne, and before that U.S. editor in New York.

John Foley has moved to a new position as Global Finance Editor. In this role he will oversee coverage of banking and finance, working with columnists around the world, while devising and launching a regular in-depth column that will showcase our sharpest and most original views on this vital industry. John has written and edited Breakingviews columns in Asia, Europe and the United States. Since 2017, he’s been an energetic leader of the U.S. team while also leading coverage of financial services in the world’s biggest capital market.

Lisa Jucca is appointed Associate Editor and European Business Editor. Lisa has spent the past five years as a columnist based in Milan, covering topics ranging from Italian politics and finance to the global luxury goods industry, European taxes, and sanctions. In nearly 25 years at Reuters, Lisa has also worked in Brussels, Zurich, and Hong Kong.

Liam Proud is appointed Associate Editor. Liam has been at Breakingviews for six years, most recently spearheading our coverage of the core topic of European banking and finance. He previously covered industries including technology and telecoms.

Hugo Dixon is returning to Reuters as Commentator-at-Large. He will write a weekly column where he will tackle the big questions facing the world at the intersection of geopolitics, markets, business, society and the environment. Hugo was the founding chair and editor-in-chief of Breakingviews. He subsequently founded InFacts, a journalistic enterprise making the case against Brexit, and most recently he helped persuade the G7 to adopt a plan to help the Global South accelerate its transition to net zero.

Shritama Bose will join us as India columnist at the start of November. Shritama joins us from Financial Express, one of India’s most respected business news publications, where she covered the Reserve Bank of India and the country’s top lenders. Shritama will help us deepen our coverage of the world’s fifth-largest and fastest-growing economy as Reuters expands its India bureaus.

Please join me in congratulating all the team on their roles and in welcoming them to the wider Reuters family.

All the best,

Peter Thal Larsen
