Reuters reveals U.S. Labor Secretary’s support for classifying gig workers as employees

President Joe Biden’s top labor official, Labor Secretary Marty Walsh, told Reuters in an interview that he supported classifying a lot of gig workers in the United States as “employees”, suggesting for the first time a potential policy shift that could raise costs for companies that depend on contractors such as Uber and Lyft. “We are looking at it but in a lot of cases gig workers should be classified as employees… in some cases they are treated respectfully and in some cases they are not and I think it has to be consistent across the board,” Walsh said.

Market Impact

Shares of Uber and Lyft fell as much as 8% and 12% respectively after the news.
