5 Iconic Met Gala moments
With the upcoming Met Gala fast-approaching, let’s take a trip down memory lane and relive some of the craziest Met Gala moments – and fashion.
Whenever it’s time for fashion’s most popular fundraising event, the Met Gala, or Met Ball, public figures from all over the world flock to New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in droves, anxious to surpass last year’s looks with even more extravagant pieces. 2019 marks the Met Gala’s 71st anniversary and the event will be held on May 6th.
The chosen theme for the 2019 Met Gala is “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” It is the brainchild of Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute, who framed the event around Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay: Notes on “Camp”, which itself presented various ways of construing the concept.
Since 1995, the exhibit has been chaired by Anna Wintour, US Vogue editor-in-chief, who enlists public figures to serve as co-hosts. This year’s ball will be co-chaired by Italian fashion designer Alessandro Michele, Harry Styles, Lady Gaga and Serena Williams.
Vogue hailed the event ‘the most fashionable night of the year’ as millions of people are attracted to their screens to witness the annual event’s fashion extravaganza via Instagram Live and Vogue’s Snapchat.
Let’s take a look at the ball’s five most iconic moments…
2018: Sarah Jessica Parker “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”
Sarah Jessica Parker always turns it out for the Met Gala. 2018 marked the second time the actress sported an impressive headpiece by Philip Treacy, serving a striking towering nativity scene paired with a Dolce & Gabbana gown.
2017: Jaden Smith “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garcons: Art of the In-Between”
The 20-year gender-norm-defying old rapper/actor stole the scene in Louis Vuitton when he strutted down the red carpet (in heels!) carrying his chopped dreadlocks – as his date. “Since I couldn’t bring my sister as a date, I brought my old hair,” he said in a red carpet interview.
2016: Beyoncé “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology”
Beyonce’s 2016 solo appearance – sans husband Jay Z – made headlines for non-fashion-related reasons. While the Grammy winner’s showstopping latex Givenchy number proved a success with critics, her solo arrival was quick to spark divorce rumors akin to her top record Lemonade.
2015: Rihanna “China: Through the Looking Glass”
We all remember the moment Rihanna strolled down the red carpet in her handmade mustard yellow gown. The Chinese couture dress was designed by Guo Pei and took two years to make. Pizza meme, anyone?
2013: Kim Kardashian “PUNK: Chaos to Couture”
While Kim Kardashian’s first Met Gala outing might have misfired on the fashion front – the Internet dubbed it “the Couch dress” -, it was her pregnancy that proved the real showstopper.
